UVS Pty Ltd  was
pleased to participate in an ADCP regatta conducted on the Namoi River at
Manilla, near Tamworth, NSW in December 2013.

Teledyne RDI supplied a River Ray Acoustic Doppler Current
Profile, complete with the new fifth beam for precise bathymetric data and
improved characterisation of slopes and irregular river beds. Backing up the
new equipment was Dr. Hening Huang, Asia Pacific Manager & Principal
Hydraulic Engineer, who travelled from San Diego to provide valuable insight
and instruction on operating the Teledyne equipment. Hening said that the
regatta was a valuable opportunity to compare different system types on the
same river and build confidence in correct usage and operation of the
equipment. Hening said that the Teledyne RDI ADCPs were particularly suited to
the conditions encountered in Australian rivers where high sediment
concentrations and moving bed load were commonly encountered at many river gauging
sites.

Andrew “Ted” Cutler, the Hydrometric Coordinator of the NSW
Office of Water

North -West Area, organised the regatta and
supplied a Teledyne RDI 600kHz Rio Grande and a River Ray ADCP instrument that
were used for comparison with the latest model River Ray 5 beam ADCP. UVS Chief
Operating Officer, Neil Trenaman, said that repeatable, accurate and precise measurement
of river discharge is essential to support the best practice management of
Australia’s scarce water resources. “Many management authorities are moving to
regular verification and validation of instruments to ensure high quality data
is available for effective management”, said Neil, “UVS is able to support this
need in Australia through our ADCP Verification Service that we have developed
together with Teledyne RDI and is based in our Newcastle facility”.
