BlueZone Group and Liquid Robotics Join for PacX Celebration in Sydney

BlueZone joined with Liquid Robotics and ocean professionals to celebrate the recovery of the “Papa Mau” Wave Glider after completion of its historic and record breaking Pacific Crossing www.liquidr.com/pacx.

At a luncheon at the Shangrila Hotel in Sydney the details of Papa Mau’s 9,600 kilometre journey were re-counted and plans for the future development of Wave Glider technology were explained to an interested audience. Liquid Robotics CEO, Bill Vass, said that oceans are an important yet neglected part of our environment and they faced serious environmental issues including climates change, ocean acidification and overfishing . This was important for an island continent like Australia with claims over vast ocean areas that would require proactive management in an uncertain environmental future. Bill said that ocean data is sparse, difficult to get and expensive to collect. The Wave Glider had the potential to change all of this.

Liquid Robotics Oceanographic Data Analyst, Luke Beatman, showed unique data obtained from the Pacific crossing and explained the Pac X Research Grant. A $50,000 BP Research Grant plus six month of Wave Glider time will be awarded by the PacX Science Board for the best abstract submitted for use of PacX data.

BlueZone, COO, Neil Trenaman said that he was very pleased to be able to invite representatives from the oceanographic, defence and science communities to celebrate the successful completion of the PacX challenge. “The 9,600 kilometre Pacific Crossing has demonstrated the endurance of the Wave Glider technology” said Neil, “there are many applications for this new way to maintain a persistent sensing presence in the ocean and we feel sure at BlueZone that ideas and applications will come from the innovative Australian ocean community”.
